The highly anticipated upcoming anime film “The Colors Within” (Kimi no Iro) is set to premiere in Japanese theaters on August 30, 2024. The movie had its world premiere at the 2024 Annecy International Animated Film Festival, where it won the Best Animation Film award.
The movie’s official X account recently released a new key visual featuring the three main characters, Totsuko, Kimi, and Rui, performing together on stage.
Naoko Yamada (A Silent Voice) is directing, and Science SARU, well-known for popular anime series and movies like The Heike Story, INU-OH, and Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken, is producing the anime film Colors Within!

GKIDS will distribute to North America, Latin America, Australia, and New Zealand. They plan to release the film in winter 2025, offering both English subtitled and dubbed versions. For the UK, Ireland, and most of Europe, Anime Ltd. will handle distribution. Additionally, PLAION PICTURES will manage the Italian and German language releases.
GKIDS describes “The Colors Within” story as follows:
Totsuko is a high school student with the ability to see the ‘colors’ of others. Colors of bliss, excitement, and serenity, plus a color she treasures as her favorite. Kimi, a classmate at her school, gives off the most beautiful color of all. Although she doesn’t play an instrument, Totsuko forms a band with Kimi and Rui, a quiet music enthusiast they meet at a used bookstore in a far corner of town. As they practice at an old church on a remote island, music brings them together, forming friendships and stirring affections. Will they discover their true ‘colors’?
